THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced eight new cases of COVID-19 Sunday, bringing the total number confirmed here since the pandemic began to 600.
The number of active cases in the district continued to decline, if only slightly, to 57.
Seven of the cases announced Sunday involved individuals in Thunder Bay and the surrounding areas, while one was in a district community. One individual was hospitalized with the virus in the ICU as of Sunday morning.
The Southbridge Roseview long-term care home, site of a major outbreak that began in November, reported a significant decline in active infections, despite accounting for four of the cases reported Sunday.
Two other new cases had no known exposure, while the exposure category for the remaining two was listed as “pending.”
Thanks to nine newly resolved cases, the number of active cases in the district sat at 57 Sunday, one lower than the day before. It’s a significant decline from numbers that reached as high as 128 in December.
Southbridge Care Homes reported a total of 17 active cases Sunday, down from 26 the day before, and from over 70 in early December.
Nineteen residents at the home have died of the virus since an outbreak was first declared on Nov. 18, accounting for most of the district's 21 deaths attributed to COVID-19.
