She was especially concerned about the more infectious UK COVID-19 variant that had been detected in six people in B.C. so far. She added there had been three cases of the South African variant also identified in the province.

“There are now a number of variants circulating worldwide that are proving to transmit more easily than the ones we’ve seen in the past. In particular, we’re concerned about one that has been labelled the UK variant,” Henry said.

Health Canada’s latest list of flights with confirmed COVID-19 infections showed an increase in flights from Amsterdam, the U.K and France with COVID aboard.

This comes as the U.S. tightens its ban on travellers from Europe.

According to latest flight exposure data from B.C. Centre for Disease Control, since Jan. 9 there have been two flights into Vancouver with COVID-19 aboard from Amsterdam and one from Frankfurt.

Henry said there were 26 COVID-19 deaths in B.C. reported from Friday to Monday and 1,344 new cases of COVID-19.

“We have plateaued at about 500 new cases of COVID-19 a day,” she said. “This is too many. This leaves us at a precipice, at a brink where we can see rapid takeoff, particularly if we start to see any of these new variants starting to transmit in our community.”

Henry said she was happy and relieved to report that 11 outbreaks have been declared over at long-term care facilities.

There are 4,392 active cases of COVID-19, with 328 of those cases in hospital including 68 in intensive care. Just over 6,600 people are in isolation after being exposed to an infected person.

B.C. Premier John Horgan said “Over the past year, British Columbians – like people around the world – have faced challenges, hardships and loss. COVID-19 has turned our lives upside down.”
