Hinshaw said Saturday about 12,700 tests were conducted over the previous 24 hours, representing a seven per cent positively rate. This follows a trend in recent days of positivity rates sitting between seven and nine per cent.
The province ramped up vaccine distribution in the final days of last year.
Between Dec. 29 and 31, Hinshaw said Alberta Health Services increased the number of vaccine doses delivered by 119 per cent, from 6,504 to 14,244. By end of day Friday, she said about 3,000 more doses would be administered marking an increase of 160 per cent over four days.
Alberta First Nations begin vaccinations
Vaccination efforts are underway at Alberta’s First Nations.
The Blood Tribe Department of Health began administrating the first of two vaccine doses to residents and staff at the Kainai Continuing Care Centre.
Vaccinations for 30 staff at the site began Dec. 24, and shots were administered for 18 residents Jan. 1. Staff received the Pfizer vaccine, which residents were given the Moderna version. The Blood Tribe was able to obtain access to vaccines quickly as a result of a licence agreement with AHS, Blood Tribe department of health CEO Derrick Fox said.
In a news release, the Blood Tribe said advocacy by Blackfoot leadership helped ensure vaccination could begin immediately on reserves. The First Nation’s health department is now reviewing at-risk groups to determine the priority for vaccinating the rest of membership.
