Among the changes that come into effect today, is the provincial minimum wage.
Minimum wage workers in Newfoundland and Labrador now make $15.60 an hour, a 60 cent increase.
Local advocates say that increase still doesn’t keep up with inflation.
Dan Meades of the Transition House Association says the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives has indicated that an actual living wage is an estimated $24 an hour.
Poverty advocates say linking the minimum wage to the Consumer Price Index doesn’t work if starting wages are too low to begin with.
The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives recently recommended to the province’s minimum wage review committee that the minimum wage be increased to $20 and hour but conceded, even that, is not enough to keep up with the cost of living.
The NDP meanwhile is calling for a graded series of increases to minimum wage to reach a livable amount over a period of a few years, and then index the rate to inflation.
