Tanya Harvey, an intensive-care unit nurse at Foothills Medical Centre, was the first to be immunized in Calgary.
“I am the biggest risk to my family and I cannot put my parents, or my husband’s parents, at risk. It isn’t easy for everyone to understand what it is like on the front lines — it’s a blessing that most people aren’t in a position to see what front-line workers see on a daily basis,” said Harvey.
She said Canadians are privileged to have universal health care. This is a glimmer of hope for Alberta and she hopes everyone takes their responsibility seriously.
“We need to help each other and promote health for one another. Please take your responsibility seriously and get your vaccine when your time comes,” Harvey added.
The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines were flown to Calgary from Louisville, Kentucky, after travelling from the production facility in Belgium over the weekend, Premier Jason Kenney explained in a video posted to Twitter.
The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine must be stored at ultra-cold temperatures so doses will be kept at designated sites in Calgary and Edmonton that have the appropriate freezers.
“This is a game-changer; this is a happy day after these nine tough months to show that there really is a light here,” said Kenney. “Thanks to all of those responsible for this vaccine program, to our task force, to everybody at Alberta Health Services, to our partners in the federal government who worked with the provinces on bulk buying.”
