Romer’s has two restaurants in Vancouver and one in Port Moody.

Getting back 10 per cent on a takeout order isn’t insignificant, said Gordon.

“You’re paying a big percentage now to takeout guys, and they’re having a pretty good run here,” he said. “It just sort of equals the playing field. And that’s all we really want.”

In making the announcement, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor-General Mike Farnworth noted that local restaurants play a vital role in communities and have experienced a significant decline in sales and traffic due to the pandemic.

“Capping food-service delivery fees is another way our government is providing immediate relief to our local businesses to ensure they can focus on retaining staff and keeping their business running,” said Farnworth.

The temporary order will remain in place until three months after the province’s state of emergency is lifted.

While vaccines have begun slowly rolling out in B.C., as they are throughout North America, provincial health officials have said it will take some time to get back to a normal semblance of life, likely not until the summer at the earliest.

B.C.’s cap on food-delivery fees only affects large firms that provide services to more than 500 restaurants, similar to Ontario’s order. The order was drafted to help protect small delivery services that are often locally based, said the province.

In a written response, DoorDash, based in Palo Alto, Calif., said pricing regulations like those announced today could cause the company to increase costs for customers, which may lead to fewer orders for local restaurants and fewer earning opportunities for local drivers.
