Major BC Ferries vessel to remain out of service indefinitely - CHEK News

BC Ferries says the Coastal Renaissance vessel, which travels between Nanaimo and Vancouver, will remain out of service until at least early September after it was pulled from rotation earlier this week due to a mechanical issue.

The ferry was initially pulled from service on Wednesday, Aug. 17, after BC Ferries discovered there was a problem with one of its drive motors, which powers its propellers.

On Friday, BC Ferries said there was no estimate as to when the Coastal Renaissance would return to service.

In the meantime, the ferry operator cancelled four daily sailings between Duke Point and Tsawwassen until at least Sept. 4.

The cancelled sailings, except for on Tuesdays and Wednesday through Aug. 30, can be found below:

  • 9:00 am departing Duke Point (Nanaimo)
  • 11:30 am departing Tsawwassen (Vancouver)
  • 2:00 pm departing Duke Point (Nanaimo)
  • 4:30 pm departing Tsawwassen (Vancouver)

BC Ferries says the Queen of Coquitlam vessel will provide extra service to the Duke Point to Tsawwassen route for the next two weeks.

The Queen of Coquitlam will sail on Aug. 22, 23, 29, and 30 – or the next two Tuesdays and Wednesdays – to cover for the four cancelled sailings on these days.

BC Ferries encourages anyone taking the Duke Point to Tsawwassen route to book a vehicle reservation at this time.

“We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience you may experience as a result of these cancellations,” said the company in a service notice Friday.
