Health Canada says it is not restricting the use of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine after a “thorough review” of data from Europe and the United Kingdom.
Reports of rare blood clots linked to the AstraZeneca shot have surfaced in several countries in recent weeks, including the first such instance in Canada reported on Tuesday, which was tied to the Covishield vaccine — India’s version of the AstraZeneca jab. The reports prompted some provinces to restrict the vaccine to anyone under 55.
Health experts have said that the risk the vaccines pose is very low. Health Canada said Wednesday that “very rare” blood clots “may be linked to the use of the vaccine.”
“Health Canada’s position that the safety of the AstraZeneca vaccine meets its strict safety standards remains valid and the department is adjusting the product’s labelling to reflect the available scientific evidence,” a statement from Health Canada said.
The Quebec woman who experienced blood clots after receiving the Covishield vaccine is recovering at home, said Health Canada.
The statement said the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) is reviewing data “to determine whether to maintain or modify its current recommendation not to use the vaccine in people under 55.”
