Students attending public schools in Nova Scotia will have a prolonged Christmas break.
At a Friday briefing, Premier Stephen McNeil said the last day of classes for 2020 will be Dec. 18.
Classes resume Jan. 11 with school-based staff returning on Jan. 4 for five days of professional learning.
"We are doing this out of an abundance of caution," McNeil said. "Christmas is coming and we are concerned that as family and friends gather, even in small groups, COVID could show up."
McNeil said following Thanksgiving weekend, some western provinces saw an increase in cases and he doesn't want to see that happen here after the holiday season.
"If COVID decides to join Christmas gatherings, cases can be identified before kids return to school," he explained.
The last day of classes in 2020 had been scheduled for Dec. 22, and the first day of school in 2021 was supposed to be Jan. 4.
On Friday, the province announced a second COVID-19 case connected to Shannon Park Elementary School in Dartmouth.
