Lynx Air news: WestJet slashes prices on Vancouver flights - Vancouver Is Awesome

WestJet has capped prices on some routes and offered discounts on others following Lynx Air's announcement that it is shutting down operations.

Lynx Air announced Thursday (Feb. 22) night that it was ceasing operations due to fierce market competition, surging fuel costs, rising operating costs, exchange rates, and increasing airport charges.

The Calgary-based carrier will cease flight operations as of 11:01 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 25). However, the airline says it will be "unable to facilitate many of the flights scheduled over the weekend as we work to bring aircraft, crews, and as many passengers as possible home."

Travel vouchers and flight vouchers will no longer be accepted once Lynx ceases operations.

WestJet has also reduced some ticket prices on Lynx routes and offered repatriation for travellers on transborder and sun flights that are capped at a lower price.

"We recognize the immediate impact this information has on passengers and employees of Lynx, and we are committed to assisting where we can through a number of actions," the airline said in a release.

The airline is also communicating with government officials and supporting agencies that are working to help stranded customers.

25% off flights on routes served by Lynx Air

Travellers can get 25% off all travel on economy fares on non-stop WestJet routes previously served by Lynx for travel between Feb. 22 and Oct. 26.

The bookings must be made by Feb. 29 to take advantage of the discount. Use the code WESTJET to get the deal.

Canadian repatriation for transborder and sun flights

WestJet will cap its prices at $250 (plus taxes and fees) on northbound economy cabin fares on non-stop routes previously served by Lynx.

The travel window for repatriation flights is shorter, with the offer only applicable to the end of the month (Feb. 29). The bookings must be made by Feb. 29 to take advantage of the discount.

Cheaper February flights

WestJet will cap its fares at $500 (plus taxes and fees) for all non-stop flights on domestic routes previously served by Lynx for travel up until Feb. 29.

All bookings should be made online through WestJet's website since it has "managed pricing to ensure fares reflect a reduction from what would typically be charged."
