VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A leading infectious disease expert says the impending rollout of COVID-19 vaccines for children five and up is going to be both safe and helpful in stemming the spread of the virus.
Dr. Brian Conway with the Vancouver Infectious Disease Center says the clinical trials for the new vaccine show the vaccines are effective in younger kids.
“[The trial showed it] was very safe. And it proved that the lower dose that is going to be used in children does generate the same level of antibody protection as a full dose does in teenagers,” he said. “The next step, pending regulatory approval, is to start vaccinating.”

Ahead of an official announcement, the registration portal opened on the B.C. government’s Get Vaccinated website Saturday to include children aged five to 11. Parents can register their children in advance for now, and there is no information available about when vaccines will be available to immunize children over five years old.
Conway says it is still unknown how the vaccination process will work at the moment.

“Children received a lower dose, a second dose was administered three weeks later, and then antibody levels were measured two weeks after that. Dr. Henry has been a strong advocate of delaying the second dose, and I suspect that she will provide us with guidance after regulatory approval has been secured.”
Conway expects parents who might be hesitant to have their children vaccinated will be armed with additional information in the coming weeks.
“Canada will not be the first country to administer the vaccine in this age group,” he said. “By the time we get around to it, hopefully next month, there will be many more doses having been administered, probably in the United States, and we’ll have increasing confidence about the safety of the vaccine in this age group.”
Health Canada is expected to approve vaccines for children aged between five and 11 this week.
