The silver squeeze posts on Reddit may be a “false flag” operation meant to distract traders away from GameStop, said Lobo Tiggre of the Independent Speculator.
“My feeling is, based on the upvoting and downvoting on Reddit, I don’t think that this was a big Wall Street Bets idea. I think at most, there was a sub-community on Wall Street Bets that said hey, there’s shorts in the silver space, let’s jump on that too,” Tiggre said.
Several posts have emerged on Reddit that either deny Wall Street Bets’ involvement with the silver squeeze trades, or suggest that the whole thing is a “trap”, and these posts were overwhelmingly upvoted.
According to some users of Reddit, posts about buying silver were also deleted by the Admins of Wall Street Bets.
Regardless of the discussion on Reddit, silver’s fundamentals remain strong, Tiggre said.
“The fundamentals are still super strong for monetary metals this year and beyond,” he said. “The GameStop people might see silver as a distraction. I see the GameStop thing potentially as a distraction. I’m a silver bull anyway, and if this Reddit thing proves to be just a fleeting, temporary tailwind, there’s nothing wrong with that.”
