No Guarantee Point-Of-Entry Testing is More Effective than Current Methods: Fitzgerald - VOCM

Newfoundland and Labrador is not considering so-called point-of-entry testing despite P.E.I.’s success with finding the UK variant of COVID-19 at its border.

Officials in P.E.I. had credited the border testing with catching the single case of the variant, saying it was a solid example of why such testing is important.

However, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald says there are still no guarantees that it would be any more effective than current methods.

She says officials in this province don’t know for sure that it would catch more variant cases here, noting it took eight days for the P.E.I. case to be confirmed positive.

Fitzgerald added there’s a false negative rate with every test that’s carried out.
