How is the vaccine given?
The Pfizer vaccine requires two doses, taken 21 days apart. The first dose is given in the form of a 0.3 millilitre injection. The second dose is given the exact same way, just three weeks later.
You must take both doses for the vaccine to work. Immunity kicks in about seven days after the second dose.
Does the vaccine work? Is it safe for everyone?
The vaccine was tested in a trial of 44,000 participants and was found to be 95 per cent effective in preventing COVID-19, starting about one week after the second dose.
It has not, however, been fully tested in people under the age of 16, pregnant women or those who are immunocompromised. At this point, Health Canada has approved the vaccine for use only in those age 16 and older. The vaccine is also not recommended at this time for those who are pregnant or immunocompromised.
Before the vaccine’s approval, Health Canada reviewed lab and clinical evidence to ensure the vaccine is safe and effective. Canadian health officials also vetted the manufacturing process to ensure it meets a high standard and has examined the final product to ensure its quality.
While the vaccine is being rolled out, health officials will continue to monitor for any serious side effects.
Getting the vaccine doesn’t protect only you, it also protects those around you — including those who may be pregnant or immunocompromised, or who may not be able to take the vaccine. The more people who are vaccinated, the harder it is for COVID-19 to spread, the safer it is in the community.
