A COVID-19 outbreak at a Windsor elementary school has now impacted 26 staff and students, and is believed to be the largest to date in an Ontario school.
Windsor-Essex County Health Unit declared the outbreak at F.W. Begley Public School on Nov. 17, and at that time there were three positive cases at the school.
The Greater Essex County District School Board says there were 26 confirmed cases as of Saturday.
For an outbreak to be declared, two or more cases in a school must be linked.
Begley has been closed until further notice, with staff and students asked to isolate for 14 days. The release said the entire school is considered at high risk for exposure to the virus.
On Friday, the health unit also declared an outbreak in a single classroom at W.J. Langlois Catholic Elementary School, which is about a 13-minute drive away.
Two confirmed cases were initially announced, and their entire class was asked to self-isolate. After further investigation, there are now four positive COVID-19 cases linked within the school and it has since been shut down.
Ontario is not the only province to experience a handful of larger, school-based coronavirus outbreaks. In Quebec, almost 80 cases were reported at Auberivière primary school in Lévis, which was also temporarily shut down. Some 28 staff and 50 students tested positive with the virus there.
