It’s also why public-health officials want to act quickly to stem the surge, Summer said, noting it will eventually start affecting older Londoners: “That’s when we see hospitalizations and deaths start to happen.”

Sunday’s count is second only to the single-day record for new London-area cases, 24, set on April 16.

A few other local COVID-19 facts:

  • There have now been a total of 974 cases so far in London and Middlesex County
  • As of Sunday morning, 79 are active
  • All others are “resolved,” including recoveries and deaths
  • There have been 57 local deaths, the most recent on June 10
  • Local hospitalizations still haven’t jumped up yet
  • There have been five or fewer COVID-19 patients in London hospitals since June
  • No new outbreaks at long-term care homes or schools were recorded this weekend

Ontario’s death toll has now topped 3,000, reaching 3,005 deaths on Sunday, with 217 people currently in hospital. More than 50 are in intensive care and 32 are on ventilators provincewide.

Public health officials and politicians urged Londoners not to travel or have close contact with people outside their homes during the Thanksgiving weekend.

Summers stressed that message on Sunday, though he noted it may be too late for those who have already travelled or organized large family gatherings.

“It’s time to close contacts to those who are only in your household,” he said, noting COVID-19 transmissions is happening “primarily” in “unmonitored, unregulated social environments.”

Summers added: “It’s not necessarily happening in schools or workplaces.”

Holder said it’s the first Thanksgiving he can ever remember celebrating without his daughter.

“I’m really, really troubled and concerned,” he said. “I think the next two weeks, sadly, London will be hit with pretty significant increases. It will make 20 look small. I want and hope to be wrong.

“The trouble with travel, it’s a bit like rolling the dice. You don’t know what you’re going to get . . . it heightens the risk.”
