The LCBO will expand operating hours at hundreds of its stores ahead of the upcoming long weekend as the province looks to begin the slow process of reopening the economy.
Over 360 stores will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, while other stores will continue with the COVID-19 schedule of 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on those days. Most stores will continue to be open from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Sundays, the LCBO said.
The new hours are set to take effect on May 14.
However, OPSEU President Warren “Smokey” Thomas accused LCBO CEO George Soleas and his executive team of putting profit ahead of staff safety by expanding hours just before the Victoria Day weekend.
“It’s absolutely appalling that Soleas and his cronies refuse to give hazard pay to their front-line workers but have no qualms about expanding the number of hours they’re potentially exposed to COVID-19,” Thomas said in a statement Wednesday.
He said the longer hours mean more opportunity for frontline staff to be exposed to COVID-19.
“I think last week (Premier Doug Ford) referred to such wanton disregard for each other’s safety as the action of yahoos,” Thomas said, referring to Ford’s comments about protesters demanding an immediate reopening of the economy. “I highly recommend the premier tell these guys to pack their bags, too.”
OPSEU said LCBO stores have seen an increase in sales of up to 31%, yet chose to reward its employees with donated chocolate bunnies.
The union has called for “pandemic recognition pay” to top up frontline workers salaries during the COVID-19 crisis.
