Saltwire Debt a Sign of Troubling Trends in Media Industry: Local Journalism Instructor - VOCM

A local journalism instructor says the financial woes facing Atlantic Canada’s largest newspaper publisher is a sign of troubling trends in the media industry.

SaltWire, the owner of The Telegram in St. John’s, is facing an uncertain future after filing for creditor protection earlier this week.

Frank Carroll, who teaches journalism at the College of the North Atlantic in St. John’s, says it’s no secret that print media has faced a number of hurdles over the past few years.

He believes there are a number of factors at play—including increased competition from digital media and an unwillingness to pay for news content.

Carroll says just 15 per cent of Canadians pay for online news subscriptions.

Operations at the Telegram are carrying on as normal, and Carroll is hopeful that the St. John’s publisher will come out on the other side, avoiding what could become a big gap in local journalism.

“A good newspaper is like a mirror to the community,” he says. “It’s a forum for dialogue about important public issues, but also to celebrate the accomplishments of people in the community. When a community does lose its local news source, it is a big loss.”
