The early morning train from London to Toronto is returning.

Via Rail is bringing back its daily 6:25 a.m. rail service from London to Toronto, a popular ride with businesspeople that was axed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As we continue to strike a balance between meeting our passengers’ evolving travel needs and deploying our limited resources, we remain committed to offering the most convenient, accessible and sustainable service to the highest number of Canadians,” Mario Péloquin, VIA chief executive, said in a media release.

He credited new trains as the reason the service is returning.

“The ongoing progressive introduction of Via Rail’s 32 new trainsets is already yielding positive results, as recent increases in equipment availability, coupled with intense recruitment and training efforts, are now allowing us to reintroduce these high-demand frequencies,” he said.

The service returns Oct. 24, less than two weeks after the GO Train linking London and Toronto makes its final run on Oct. 13. Metrolinx announced in June the two-year pilot project was ending. The GO Train is another option for Londoners travelling to downtown Toronto, but the trip takes four hours with stops in St. Marys, Stratford, Kitchener and Guelph.

A $25M VIA station upgrade, and maybe an early daily train to Toronto, too?

The 6:25 a.m. Via train from London is scheduled to arrive in Toronto at 8:35 a.m.

Known as Route 82, the train runs every day except Sunday.

Now, the earliest morning train to Toronto from London leaves at 7:40 a.m. and does not arrive until after 10 a.m.

Route 83, the afternoon train to Toronto from London, is returning as well. The train leaves Toronto at 4:15 p.m. and arrives in London at 6:27 p.m. daily except for Saturday.

In July, VIA announced it is investing $25 million into improving its York Street station, including structural, mechanical and electrical work as well as new design elements. In recent years the station has had heating and cooling system upgrades.

In addition, VIA also is adding two return trips daily from Toronto to Ottawa.
