Sunwing Airlines to Merge with WestJet - VOCM

An airline linking Canadians to popular southern vacation destinations will soon cease to exist as we know it.

Sunwing Airlines will join Swoop in merging its fleet into the WestJet company, following last month’s agreement with WestJet’s pilots.

The airline, known for providing lower-cost flights and vacation packages to sunny destinations like Cuba and Jamaica, currently flies seasonal routes out of St. John’s, Gander and Deer Lake.

There is no timeline on when Sunwing will merge with its mainline company, but questions remain as to what the change will mean for air access in Newfoundland and Labrador.

WestJet has scaled back its operations in this province over the past year, reducing flights to and from St. John’s and completely shutting down service to Deer Lake.

In light of the concerns raised, Premier Andrew Furey and Tourism Minister Steve Crocker recently met with WestJet to discuss their role in improving air access to the province.
