New research from the Angus Reid Institute indicates that many Canadians are ready to do away with tipping.
While their data suggests that overall people are tipping more, they’re growing tired of the current system.
The institute says people are reporting what’s called a “tip creep” —where more places that never used to ask for a tip are now prompting for one. In fact, they say 83 per cent of people say too many places are asking for tips these days.
As a result, they say preference has now shifted to a “service included” model, whereby tipping is done away with in favour of higher wages for employees.
They say support for such a model has increased to 59 per cent of those surveyed, up 19 points from 2016 numbers. As well, support for the current system, with tipping being part of the experience, has declined by 14 points to 32 per cent.
