A temporary solution has been found at St. john’s International Airport. They resumed normal operations at 8:00 this morning but caution that it is not a permanent solution.
Large, commercial passenger flights hadn’t been able to land at YYT since 8 p.m. Tuesday. Only smaller and cargo aircraft were able to land. Gander is being used as an alternative.
The Union of Canadian Transportation Employees is alleging harassment and bullying from the Airport Authority after employees went to them regarding workplace health and safety issues.
Premier Andrew Furey says he is pleased a temporary solution has been found, and hopes a lasting solution is found quickly. He became aware of the dispute Saturday night and has been working since then to try to find a resolution.
Federal Cabinet minister Seamus O’Regan tweeted out that Barney Dobbin, a senior mediator from Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, has been brought in and worked with the parties through the night. He is from St. John’s and O’Regan says he knows the ground here well.
Regional Vice-president Chris Bussey says this situation didn’t evolve overnight, nor will it be resolved overnight.
In terms of what needs to happen next, Bussey says the airport needs to denounce harassment, bullying and discriminations in the workplace, and send a clear message that it won’t be tolerated.
He says they need to tell workers how their concerns are going to be addressed.
The airport is a critical piece of infrastructure that the people of our province rely on. I have been in constant contact with the federal ministers on this labour dispute, and am pleased normal operations are resuming at this time – hoping it quickly reaches a lasting solution. https://t.co/Ot7a5vnWZI
