VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – British Columbia’s top doctor says there is no cause for concern after 12 people under age 18 received the Moderna vaccine.
Not yet approved for people in that age group, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry confirmed Monday that doses were mistakenly given to teenagers.
“It is unfortunate. I am aware of about a dozen cases and it is an error, but it is something that we don’t believe is an error that will cause any clinical harm to people,” she says.
Henry says even though Pfizer is the only vaccine approved for use in Canada for anyone younger than 18, she is not concerned.
“There’s no safety concerns or effectiveness concerns if you have Moderna and then a Pfizer or vice versa,” Henry says.
Although Henry is confident Moderna will soon be approved for anyone 12 or older, she says that it does not excuse what happened.

“The immunizers certainly need to disclose, which I understand they did, to the parents and to the young people who received the vaccine in error,” she says.
Meanwhile, Henry says some people already registered to get their second dose may need to wait a little longer due to timing between doses.
“It may have been that people had booked their appointment and then, it was recognized that they had not yet been at eight weeks for dose two.”
She also acknowledges that some glitches involving pre-booked appointments getting cancelled are being ironed out.
“We were able to move vaccine around. So people who showed up at the clinics, there was not, that I’m aware of, appointments were cancelled because of lack of vaccine,” she says.
Since Friday, B.C. has recorded 11 more deaths, 708 new cases of COVID-19. Of the 249 patients hospitalized, 78 are in critical care. The provincial vaccination rate has climbed to 66 per cent of all eligible people over the age of 12.
