Loblaw Cos Ltd. is ending its $2 per hour pandemic wage premium for its employees, the company’s chief executive said Thursday.
“Finally, as the economy slowly reopens and Canadians begin to return to work, we believe it is the right time to end the temporary pay premium we introduced at the beginning of the pandemic,” Loblaw Chief Executive Officer Galen G. Weston said in a statement.
“Things have now stabilized in our supermarkets and drug stores. After extending the premium multiple times, we are confident our colleagues are operating safely and effectively in a new normal.”
The decision to end the wage increase was criticized by Unifor National President Jerry Dias.
"The pandemic is not over. The danger has not passed. These workers are no less at risk and are no less essential today than they were yesterday. There is no justification for ending pandemic pay now, or ever," Dias said in a statement.
According to the union, Loblaw said it will pay workers a one-time bonus in July based on hours of work, amounting to $160 for an employee who works 40 hours per week.
The Brampton, Ont.-based grocer implemented the wage premium in March as the pandemic took hold. Metro Inc. also offered a $2 wage premium to workers, which is set to expire June 13.
